July Recap: Building New Media Partnerships in Warri

As July came to a close, Global Links & Services Ltd. strengthened its commitment to using media as a driver of travel, tourism and investment through a courtesy visit to Mega FM Warri.

U.S. Expands ‘Do Not Travel’ List to 23 Countries

The United States has updated its highest-level travel advisory, placing 23 countries under Level 4 – Do Not Travel, warning American citizens against travelling to these destinations because of significant security and health risks.

Ten African countries are on the list, including Burkina Faso, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. Other countries include Afghanistan, Belarus, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen.

According to the U.S. State Department, Level 4 advisories are reserved for destinations where there are severe threats such as armed conflict, terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, civil unrest or public health emergencies. In some of these countries, the U.S. government says its ability to provide emergency assistance to citizens is extremely limited.

Uganda was newly upgraded to Level 4 following concerns over an Ebola outbreak, alongside ongoing risks from crime, terrorism and civil unrest. The DRC also faces additional U.S. travel restrictions linked to Ebola response measures.

What this means for travellers

A U.S. Level 4 advisory is not an international travel ban, nor does it prevent citizens of other countries from travelling. Instead, it is official guidance issued to American travellers based on the U.S. government’s assessment of the risks.

If your travel plans include any of the affected destinations, monitor official advisories from your own country’s foreign affairs ministry, review your travel insurance carefully, and stay informed about local security and health conditions before departure.

Mrs Chinyere Umeasiegbu (Pastor Chi), Managing Director of Global Links & Services Ltd., joined an exclusive group of Nigerian tourism professionals when she was formally inducted as a Fellow of the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (FITPN) during the ninth edition of the National Tourism Transportation Summit (NTTS) and Expo in Abuja on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Travel Advisory

Dual U.S. Citizens Must Travel with a U.S. Passport

If you hold both U.S. and another country’s citizenship, including Nigerian citizenship, the U.S. Mission has issued an important reminder ahead of your next trip.

Under U.S. law, all U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, are required to use a valid U.S. passport when entering or leaving the United States. Travelling on only a foreign passport for these journeys can result in delays, denied boarding, or complications at immigration.

The advisory also warns dual citizens not to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) using a foreign passport. U.S. citizens are not eligible for ESTA, and such applications are typically denied or cancelled.

Before you travel:

• Check that your U.S. passport is valid well before your departure date.

• Carry and use your U.S. passport when travelling to or from the United States.

• If you also need your Nigerian passport for entry or exit requirements, travel with both passports and present the appropriate one when required by immigration authorities.

Who does this affect?
This advisory applies only to dual U.S. citizens. It does not change travel requirements for Nigerians who are not U.S. citizens and are travelling on valid U.S. visas.

Ije Tip: Passport validity should be one of the first items on your travel checklist. Renewing an expired passport is far easier than dealing with travel disruptions at the airport.

From the Final Whistle to Take-Off: How One World Cup Night Produced a New Traveller

Spain may have lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy with a 1–0 victory over Argentina, but for one football fan in Delta State, the biggest win of the night came after the final whistle.

At the Africa For Peace Games Village, Osubi, Ikpe Andrew, popularly known as CY Tech, emerged winner of a return domestic Air Peace ticket in a customer reward campaign jointly organised by Global Links & Services Ltd. and Air Peace Limited.

The promotion ran throughout the World Cup, rewarding patrons who purchased food and drinks worth at least ₦15,000 with an entry into the raffle draw. The objective was to reward customer loyalty while creating an engaging matchday experience for football fans.

Ironically, the eventual winner wasn’t present when his receipt was drawn.

He was immediately contacted by phone, and what followed became one of the evening’s standout moments. As the news sank in, cheers erupted both at the venue and from his home, where his wife’s excitement could clearly be heard over the call.

The ceremonial presentation of the dummy ticket was led by Amara Nwogbo, Air Peace Station Manager, Osubi, alongside Tony Onwuchekwa, Communications Director of Global Links & Services Ltd., and Fidelis Enyashi, the company’s Operations Manager. In the absence of the winner, the ticket was received on his behalf by Barry Ariye, Business Development Manager, Africa For Peace Games Village.

The evening also featured consolation prizes, including branded T-shirts, mugs and face caps, ensuring that more guests went home with lasting memories.

A key part of the event’s success was the energy brought by MC Emmaralo, whose lively hosting kept fans engaged throughout the World Cup final. From pre-match activities and halftime interactions to building anticipation for the raffle draw after the final whistle, he kept the audience entertained and ensured the excitement remained high until the presentation of the prizes.

The campaign itself extended well beyond the venue. Throughout the tournament, the Global Links–Air Peace partnership was promoted through on-site branding, radio tours, social media and features on Ije – The World of Travel, reinforcing the message that travel is about experiences as much as destinations.

NYSC Batch B Stream II: Travel Smart to Orientation Camp

The National Youth Service Corps has announced that the 2026 Batch B Stream II Orientation Course will run from August 5 to August 25, with call-up numbers already available on prospective corps members’ dashboards. As preparations intensify, the scheme is urging all participants to make safety their first priority.

The key message is to avoid travelling at night.

While many corps members will be travelling across unfamiliar routes and covering long distances, daylight travel significantly reduces the risks associated with poor visibility, road insecurity, driver fatigue, and breakdowns in isolated areas.

Before You Leave

A few simple steps can make your journey safer and less stressful:

• Download and print your NYSC call-up letter as soon as it becomes available.

• Plan your route and identify safe stopover points if your journey cannot be completed in one day.

• Inform family or trusted friends of your itinerary and keep them updated during your trip.

• Charge your phone fully and carry a power bank.

• Travel with valid identification and keep digital copies of important documents.

• Pack light but include essentials such as medications, drinking water, snacks, and basic toiletries.

On the Road

Choose reputable transport operators, avoid boarding overloaded vehicles, fasten your seat belt where available, and remain alert throughout the journey. If delays mean you’ll be travelling after dark, consider spending the night in a safe location and continuing your trip the following morning.

US Updates Highest ‘Do Not Travel’ List

The United States has updated its global travel advisories, placing 23 countries under its highest warning level—Level 4: Do Not Travel.

According to the U.S. Department of State, a Level 4 advisory is reserved for destinations where security risks are considered extreme or where the U.S. government has limited ability to assist its citizens. The guidance is unequivocal: “Do not travel.”

Among the countries on the list are 11 African nations: Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

Other countries designated Level 4 include Afghanistan, Belarus, Myanmar, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen.

Nigeria Remains Level 3

Nigeria remains under Level 3: Reconsider Travel, although several states are separately classified as Level 4 because of heightened security concerns.

The U.S. cites risks including crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest and inconsistent healthcare services. The Nigerian government has maintained that the advisory reflects Washington’s internal risk assessment process and does not represent the country’s overall security situation.

UK Transit Visa Update: Many Nigerian Travellers May Not Need a Direct Airside Transit Visa

If you’re a Nigerian traveller connecting through the United Kingdom, here’s an important update that could save you time, money, and unnecessary paperwork.

British Airways has reminded travel partners that not every Nigerian passport holder requires a UK Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) when transiting through a UK airport. This clarification follows growing confusion over the UK’s transit requirements.

According to the airline, Nigerian passport holders do not need a DATV if they hold certain valid visas or residence permits, including:

• A valid visa for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the United States.

• A permanent residence permit issued by Australia or New Zealand.

• A common-format residence permit issued by an EEA country or Switzerland.

• A Canadian Permanent Resident Card issued on or after 28 June 2002.

• A Category D national visa issued by an EEA country or Switzerland.

• An Irish biometric visa marked “BC” or “BC BIVS”.

• A Schengen Approved Destination Scheme (ADS) group tourism visa, subject to the relevant travel conditions.

• A valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) or other qualifying U.S. immigration documentation specified by UK authorities.

These exemptions apply only when travellers meet the UK’s transit conditions, so it’s important to verify your eligibility before booking or travelling.

Transit visa rules can be one of the most misunderstood parts of international travel. Assuming you need a visa when you don’t can lead to unnecessary costs, while assuming you’re exempt without checking can result in denied boarding.

Before your next trip involving a UK connection, confirm the latest requirements using the official UK government guidance rather than relying on social media or unofficial sources.

• Validity: If you received a manual stamped visa during that period, it is original and valid.

• Standard Fee: The visa fee remains $80, regardless of whether you receive a manual stamp or the new stickers.

3. Turkey: Travel with a Purpose 🇹🇷

We are moving away from individual applications to “Batch Processing” for Turkey. Why? Because a group with a shared purpose has a much higher approval rate at the consulate.

For decades, the narrative surrounding Nigerian youth and professionals has been dominated by “Japa”, a Yoruba term for “fleeing” or migrating in search of greener pastures. However, a new economic movement is taking root in the Niger Delta, one that suggests the “green pastures” might actually be blue.

The recent “Harnessing Our Blue Wealth for Sustainable Growth and Shared Prosperity” summit held in the oil city of Warri marks a pivotal shift in Nigeria’s economic strategy. As the nation looks to diversify beyond oil, the “blue economy”, the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources, is emerging as a multibillion-dollar frontier for innovation, job creation, and regional stability.

Warri: The Reawakening of a Maritime Giant

Once a bustling gateway for commerce, the port city of Warri is being repositioned as the heartbeat of Nigeria’s blue economy. The Olu of Warri, a key proponent of this vision, envisions a resilient Niger Delta where marine resources are managed sustainably to protect biodiversity for future generations. “While we want our lives to be drastically improved by the proceeds of the blue economy, our environment must not pay the price,” the monarch cautioned at the summit.

Historically, when the Warri port was fully functional, it served as a more efficient gateway to the East than the often-congested ports in Lagos. A revived maritime sector in Warri means cheaper goods, lower logistics costs, and the revitalisation of a trucking and transportation network that once supported thousands of local traders. Where Your Passport Should (and Shouldn’t) Travel

Never keep your passport in checked luggage, back pockets, loose bags, or seat-back pockets; those are the easiest places to lose it or have it stolen. Keep it on you: a zipped front pocket, money belt, or a secure inner compartment of your carry-on. If you can’t feel it, it’s already in the wrong place.
